An exposé on Eva (October 2009)

The Journal’s Culture Magazine took some the time to find out about Art Evolution artist Eva Bauer.

Eva was born in a small town called Bad Dürkheim in Germany. Eva explains “When I was growing up I used to draw with my grandmother. She loved drawing. She often sat with me and we drew lots of different things together. She always wanted to be more creative and didn’t get the chance because those were different times. There wasn’t the choice for women to do their own thing back then.

I think that early influence, my grandmother, has definitely had something to do with me being a creative person.

When I went to school, I always enjoyed art but I didn’t know I was going to become an artist. Then in my late teens and early twenties I went to art exhibitions and saw stuff I liked. I was taken to see Gustav Klimt and went to see a Schiele exhibition, which later informed an interest in Viennesse art and art nouveau. I made and effort to see much more art by people like Miro, Chagall and others. I still didn’t necessarily want to become an artist, but I always knew I wanted to do something creative.”

Eva continues “For my A-levels I did a reproduction Klimt painting, which turned out to be an amazing experience and gave me more confidence. I still hadn’t decided to do a degree in art, that was more to do with me moving from Germany to England, and doing a foundation course at North Tyneside. The course was great because we got a taste of lots of different things like graphic design, sculpture, fashion and fine art.

One of the course tutors was especially supportive and gave me the confidence to study fine art. During my degree at Northumbria University I began to experiment with textures, surfaces and colour. These experiments helped me to form the style I use today. I got my first studio after I graduated and started selling my paintings.

I have sold work at exhibitions, through the online art gallery Art Evolution, and have completed several commissions. One of these was for a property developer in Newcastle and another for the Newcastle Building Society.”
