Where did you go for business advice?
Entrust, Newcastle City Council

How did you decide which line of business to enter?
Both directors has worked with North-East artists and found it was very difficult for them to market their work. There are a limited number of galleries in the region and it can be hard for artists to get exposure. By the same token it is hard for people to find new and exciting artists, so we decided to provide affordable, accessible art.

How did you come up with the company name?
Art has evolved in the North-East in recent years with the Baltic, the work of Anthony Gormley and others. We are evolving the way people think about art and buy art, so we are Art Evolution.

What’s the best thing about running your own business?
(Victoria Anderson says) The complete buzz of creating something then seeing it work. Being in control of my like and taking it forward in my own way so I can build the business around my lifestyle. Being able to learn from my mistakes. We get to expose people with few connections to artists and make great art available to everybody. Art should not be elitist and we are doing our bit to make this so. I am passionate about art.

The variety, the fact someone has created something lovingly and with great skill. I can pass this passion on to our customers and help them make a statement about themselves or their business through art. I never fail to point out that art has out-performed the stock market for the last 25 years, so it is not a bad investment too.

What is the worst thing about running your own business?
The amount of time you spend doing it. It’s a whole lot of hours.

What advice would you give to anyone starting out?
Think about it carefully, plan, take advice and talk to people. Then when you are ready, let absolutely nothing stand in your way.
