Bridging Art and Business (September 06)

Artwork by Glynnis Carter commissioned by Sunderland City Council

Newcastle based art gallery Art Evolution has partnered with City of Sunderland Council to added the final touches to their e-business incubator at Rainton Bridge South, Sunderland.

Over the last three months Art Evolution and e-incubator manager Maurice Tinkler have worked together with artist Glynnis Carter to create a stunning backdrop to this state-of-the art building.

Four large scale landscape paintings were commissioned for the buildings’ boardroom to reflect the stunning views the building has to offer. The work which comprises of work up to two metres in length certainly has the wow factor that manager Maurice Tinkler was after. The paintings echo the contemporary design of the building and sweeping vistas will no doubt prove to be a hit with tenants and visitors to the state-of-the-art facility.

Glynnis Carter, an Art Evolution artist, spoke about her recent commission ‘My work is a response to the landscape rather than a realistic representation of it. I paint intuitively and it's what happens on the canvas that determines how the painting develops. The Rainton Bridge paintings are inspired by memories of many years commuting from Durham to Sunderland in ever changing weather and light conditions. In the paintings I have tried to convey the feeling of the expansive landscape and skies to the north of the A690 between East and West Rainton, the distant view of the hills around Durham, the colour and structure of the rock strata of Houghton Cut and the sweep of the road when approaching it from the west.

The commissioned artwork is another feather in the cap of the 5,000 sq.m e-business incubator which provides high quality accommodation for knowledge-based businesses. The centre which is equipped with a range of intelligent features, such as the latest WiFi and smart-card technology that will enable users to access their data from anywhere in the building, is already home to companies such as number of emerging and established companies.

The e-business incubator is just one part of the Rainton Bridge South development, the most recent business park being developed by the City of Sunderland Council and Akeler Developments Ltd. The business park, which will accommodate the next generation of office-based businesses, will eventually attract investment totaling £100 million and generate more than 4,000 high quality jobs, with a total of 80,000 sq.m. of office accommodation on offer.

Those interested in seeing what the building has to offer, including the stunning artwork by regional artists Glynnis Carter should contact Marice Tinkler on 0191 3055 004.
