The North East England Campaign reports on Newcastle based art retailer Art Evolution and Newcastle City Council who have joined forces to add the final touches to their striking city centre incubator building, i6 Charlotte Square.

Artwork by North East artist Iris Houghton, who Art Evolution promote, is currently being housed in the reception of the Grade II listed building located in the Grainger Town quarter of the city centre.

The building which was designed by local architects Bill Hopper Design, was refurbished at a cost of £1.6 million. Since its completion in 2004 the building has received an overwhelming thumbs up from both tenants and visitors. On seeing the building it is obvious why. The principal design feature is a striking, central, glazed atrium that links the historic Charlotte Square building with the former warehouse. This coupled with oodles of glass, chrome and brick make a fabulous building to do business.

The online gallery owners Art Evolution approached Diane McElligot, centre manage for i6, regarding artwork by painter Iris Houghton which incorporates digital imagery as they thought the two partnered perfectly.

‘Iris’s work fits in complete harmony with i6’ says Victoria Anderson Managing Director of Art Evolution. ‘The contemporary style and integration of digital artwork in to her paintings was perfect for both the style of the building and the type of tenant in i6. The Charlotte Square building has a range of IT and digital based companies such as nCast, PointOV and TNL, and as such her paintings encompasses these businesses – contemporary, high tech and dynamic.’

The painting ‘Spangles’ by Iris Houghton is a metre wide creation that incorporates acrylic & digital images on boxed canvasm using bold pinks, reds and greens. It currently has pride of place in the reception area of i6 – adding the extra touch of style to finish off the building.

It’s hanging is well timed as the i6 incubator is celebrating its success, of the development and it’s support of North East businesses, on the 21st September. The celebration will bring together all those involved in the the development of the Charlotte Square facility and its continued success, and will include speeches by Barry Richardson of Newcastle City Council’s Economic Development and Councillor Cookson, Chair of Regeneration as well as businesses within the incubator space.
