Northern graduate Jonathan Chapman is taking the City by storm (August 06)

The Telegraph’s Colin Gleadell highlights artwork by Art Evolution artist Jonathan Chapman is a great buy.

London's art-school degree shows have had their fair share of publicity this past month. So what about those hopeful students outside the capital? Statistics tell us that while only five per cent of art students nationwide find full-time work as artists, that percentage rises to 40 or 50 in the north of England.

The Northern Graduates exhibition, which featured artwork by Jonathan Chapman, took place this August at the Curwen and New Academy Gallery in London.

Among the 15 artists selected was 22-year-old painter Jonathan Chapman who has called Newcastle upon Tyne his home. Chapman describes his style as "graphic Impressionist", influenced by the post-impressionist art of Gauguin, van Gogh and Toulouse Lautrec.
In a series called ‘Postcards to Nowhere’, he explores the suburban streets of Boston and the East Coast towns of America. "I wanted to capture that sense of walking down a street in a strange neighbourhood," says Chapman. "At certain times of the day, they were desolate - like a Hollywood Western movie set.
