Stephen Gibbs

Stephen’s work explores ways in which we view nature through culture. His style aims to show how cultural understanding shapes perception of nature. Part of his work views Japanese culture through modern technology. Stephen’s work is often constructed as sculptures or installations and then photographed and digitally manipulated. This can often consist of magazine clippings, photographs, images found on the internet or drawings.

'I view nature through culture and come out with these works. I believe that society has an impact on the way in which we process our thoughts. We look at the world around us and our perception is immidietly manipulated to suit each persons individualy cultured mind. This is an image in the mind and what I strive to create.'

'Liminality is an important aspect to my work, this idea of being in between something. Whether it is in between states of mind, idea’s, thoughts, or even more literally, in between places. I want my work to play on the idea of being in between nature and culture, Reality and Fiction, a confused hallucinatory and an unknown place.'
