Sandra Davies

Sandra work is inspired by landscape and history: specifically those landscapes that contain sufficient of man’s interventions to demonstrate the effects of weather and time. These factors are readily found in Orkney, whose horizons, history, poetry and weather combine in such a way as to guarantee a personal sense of delight, as well as in Teesside’s industrial and urban history. Sandra is currently investigating history in terms of genealogy and social history such as migration and commemoration.

She has always painted and drawn by building layers, by adding and subtracting, so that printmaking - the making of plates, inking and proofing and reworking until the image expresses her intent - although never as expected - is totally suited to her natural working practice. Her prints are almost always ‘one-offs’ because she likes to see what variations can be found with each plate . Sandra aims to make work that produces “the exquisite ache which the physical world induces”.
